NEWS RELEASES

July 30, 2026 - The Phoenix Challenge Foundation has announced a momentous expansion of its scholarship program, made possible through a series of generous gifts from distinguished leaders across the flexographic and label and package printing industry. These contributions have established a permanent, self-sustaining endowment that will significantly increase both the number and value of scholarships awarded to students pursuing careers in flexography and package printing.

For nearly three decades, the Phoenix Challenge Foundation has worked to strengthen the industry's workforce pipeline by connecting students with hands-on education, mentorship, and financial support. The growth through generous commitment to the endowment marks a transformative milestone for the organization, creating a lasting source of scholarship funding that will benefit future generations rather than relying solely on annual fundraising efforts.

"This expansion represents a defining moment for our foundation and for the future of our industry," said Bettylyn Krafft, Executive Director of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation. "Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our industry's leaders, we can now reach more students, provide more scholarships, and offer the long-term support needed to help the next generation build successful careers in flexography and package printing."

The expanded scholarship program will provide:

  • An increased number of annual scholarships to be awarded for students enrolled in accredited flexographic, graphic communications and package printing programs.

  • Rewarding scholarships help offset the rising costs of tuition, materials, and equipment training.

  • Continued investment in mentorship, internship placement, and professional networking opportunities.

  • A permanent endowment designed to sustain student support for generations to come.

The endowment was made possible through the generosity of respected industry pioneers and champions of workforce development, including Ann and Howard B. Vreeland Jr., Chairman of Anderson & Vreeland Inc. and a longtime advocate for flexographic education and innovation; FTA Hall of Famer Jean Jackson, formerly of Praxair Corporation; and Arleen Neustein, one of the family owners of Excelsior Packaging Group and the first woman inductee of the FTA Hall of Fame. Their leadership and philanthropy reflect a shared commitment to ensuring a strong future for the flexographic and package printing industry by investing in its next generation of professionals.

Howard B. Vreeland Jr. on the PCF Scholarship fund said, "The strength of our industry has always depended on developing skilled people and giving them opportunities to succeed. Supporting the Phoenix Challenge Foundation is an investment in the future that my wife, Ann, and I are deeply passionate about. We both hope this endowment inspires others to join in building the workforce our industry will need for years to come."

Arleen Neustein echoed that commitment, saying, "Education has always been one of the most important investments we can make. I am honored to support the Phoenix Challenge Foundation's scholarship endowment and help open doors for students who will become the innovators, leaders, and problem-solvers of tomorrow's printing and packaging industry."

"Investing in students today means investing in the future of our entire industry," said Jean Jackson. "I am proud to support the Phoenix Challenge Foundation's mission and to help ensure that talented, motivated students have a clear path into rewarding careers in package printing."

Students interested in applying for a Phoenix Challenge Foundation scholarship, as well as companies and individuals interested in supporting the endowment, are encouraged to visit phoenixchallenge.org or contact Bettylyn Krafft, Executive Director of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation.

As the Phoenix Challenge Foundation approaches its 30th anniversary, this historic endowment ensures its mission will continue to inspire, educate, and prepare the next generation of flexographic professionals for decades to come.

Realizing the gap in educational tools and programs for some time, this initiative is the result of a focused effort of over three years.  With the support of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation, a dedicated team of flexo experts, educators and curriculum designers worked countless hours defining and building a tool that aligns with today’s educational philosophy and programs. The team’s collaboration has delivered a modern, up-to-date, and highly relevant volume to support a strong curriculum.

9 June 2026 — The Phoenix Challenge Foundation is honored to announce the formal adoption of Flexography in the Classroom© as an official educational resource across all of its high school and career center programs. This milestone marks the latest addition to the Foundation's growing educational toolbox, reinforcing its commitment to advancing industry knowledge and workforce readiness in the flexographic printing and packaging industries.

Flexography in the Classroom has been formally classified and copyrighted as a Technical Publication by the United States Copyright Office — a designation that recognizes its unique value as a rigorous, standards-aligned instructional work. This classification places the textbook among the nation's most credentialed technical learning resources and underscores the quality and depth of content it brings to students and educators.

Flexography in the Classroom now becomes the preeminent text for classroom learning, covering the breadth of flexographic printing principles — from prepress and plate-making to substrates, inks, and more — providing students with the foundational knowledge required to succeed in today's competitive packaging and print marketplace. Its adoption as a core resource and an important tool in the Phoenix Challenge Foundation Educational Toolbox.

“This textbook is more than a milestone — it's a testament to what technical education in our industry can be. With our Flexography in the Classroom textbook now fully U.S. Copyrighted and woven into Phoenix Challenge Foundation programs, students and educators everywhere have a learning resource they can truly trust.  I'm deeply proud of what the team and the achievement represent.”
